36th Annual Game Ball Run Partners with Marcus Lattimore!

Every year, the brothers of the Delta Chapter of Sigma Nu partner with the Theta Zeta Chapter of Clemson University to run the Game Ball for the annual Palmetto Bowl between Carolina and Clemson from The Memorial Stadium (Clemson) to The Williams Brice Stadium (University of South Carolina), or vice-versa. The event raises money and awareness for charitable organizations selected by the fraternities. In the past years, the brothers of the Delta Chapter have made this donation to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation; however, the delta chapter has partnered with the Marcus Lattimore Foundation for the 38th Annual Game Ball Run. The Foundation is 501c3 public non-profit, donor-supported organization that is dedicated to youth development programs and initiatives which emphasize Christian values, character, life-skills development, education, recreation, and health and wellness. Marcus Lattimore, a name known by any gamecock fan, was a former player of the Carolina football program. After his tremendous contribution to the University of South Carolina on the field and now to the community off the field, the Delta Chapter is eager to assist the Lattimore Foundation with proceeds from the 2015 Game Ball Run. Sigma Nu is excited to announce that Marcus is planning to attend the Game Ball Run Band Party set for the evening of Friday, November 20th. We also plan to support The Swing Mission of The Caribbean Youth Network through the Game Ball Run to fund the development of a youth community in the Bahamas. We currently are organizing a mission trip with brothers for this year. Last year we were able to construct a baseball field for the children that are currently living in the mission. The Swing Mission of The Caribbean Youth Network in the Bahamas is run by the family of alumni Ken Dehart.

Not only was last year's event successful financially, but the Sigma Nu Game Ball Run also gained mcuh more publicity. For the first time last year, the University of South Carolina's communications board added the event to their list of Rivalry Week events. We opened the first two miles of the run-from Williams Brice Stadium to the Sigma Nu house- up to the students and community of the university and had a tremendous turnout. Over 150 people ran from the stadium to the fraternity house and the run had to be registered as a PARADE due to its size.

Last year’s Game Ball Run was one of the most successful philanthropic events in our chapter’s history. We started the fundraising with the hopes of reaching $20,000 and greatly surpassed those expectations by reaching $30,000. We are looking to reach an amount of $40,000 from the event this year. The delta chapter specifically chooses our charities as a fraternity and has close ties to each of them. The majority of our funds raised will be donated to the Marcus Lattimore Foundation. A smaller portion will be donated to the Swing Mission of The Caribbean Youth Network in the Bahamas, which is run by the family of alumni Ken Dehart. Another portion of our funds will be spread out locally in Columbia, SC to help those in need in our own community following the historical flooding this year.

After our research the Delta Chapter purchased the pin from Mrs. Sue, who sold it to our chapter for a much cheaper price than other pins of that age. We have received the pin and presented the pin and information to our parents and alumni at our Game Ball Run oyster roast. The pin will soon be placed in a case and be displayed at the Sigma Nu Delta Chapter house.

A Chance to Reconnect With History

This past November the Delta Chapter received an amazing chance to reconnect with a piece of their history. Using the Delta Chapter’s website a girl named Emily reached out to our fraternity. She was shopping for a brother pin on Etsy, a social media store, for a Sigma Nu friend in California who had lost his. Thankfully she had knowledge of Sigma Nu chapters and how the brother pins are handed out because she stumbled across something that nobody was expecting.

A woman named Sue had found a Sigma Nu brother pin at an estate sell a while back and was selling it on Etsy. On the back of brother pins are the specific chapter’s tag (Delta Δ) and the certain brother’s initiation number. The brother pin that Sue had found had Δ75 inscribed on the back. To give a quick reference of how many brothers the Delta Chapter currently has, this past fall our last candidate was given the number Δ1876.

After we performed thorough research we found that Δ75 belonged to Claude Evans King. His graduation date is unknown, but Mr. King became a physician in early 1905. Shortly after Mr. King became a physician he joined the army to fight in World War One for our country. It was during WWI where Claude Evans King gave his life protecting our freedom.

During the research we found that there is a great amount of missing information, and our chapter hopes that eventually someone who reads this will have more information to offer. If you do have or find any additional information please contact us through our website and let us know.

The Caribbean Youth Network

During our annual philanthropy event, Game Ball Run, the chapter raises money more multiple charities and allocates a portion of the philanthropy funds to our alumni Ken Dehart's family (the Swing's) mission on Long Island, a third world island in the Bahamas. The Swing family operates a facility called "The Oasis" which serves as a shelter, kitchen, church, and a center for all organized youth sports (in a community that has never had them before).

Thanks to the Delta Chapter's donation hundreds of kids now have basketballs, baseball gear, a volleyball net, and a lawn mower for the baseball field and much more.

Sigma Nu Delta Chapter Helps Out With Habitat for Humanity

On Saturday February 22nd, 2014, the brothers of Sigma Nu Delta Chapter helped out with Habitat for Humanity. Habitat for Humanity is an international, non-governmental, and non-profit organization, which has been devoted to building “simple, decent, and affordable” housing for communities in need. One of the ways this process is completed is through the financial support of Habitat for Humanity ReStores. Habitat ReStores are retail outlets that re-sell new and used building and household materials donated by large companies, job sites, and individuals. Proceeds from ReStores help local affiliates fund the construction of Habitat houses within the community. Our Fraternity Philanthropy chair Jay Benton contacted the manager of the local Habitat ReStore and organized a day for brothers to volunteer. The local Habitat ReStore was in the process of relocating to a different store here in Columbia, S.C. While on the site that day, the brothers of Sigma Nu accomplished numerous tasks that helped with the relocation of the Habitat ReStore in the nearby area. They completed tasks such as gathering up merchandise that needed to be put into freight trucks to be taken to the other store location, throwing away all trash or merchandise that would not be sold at the new store, along with other things to make sure that the entire old Habitat ReStore was completely empty. The brothers split into two different three-hour shifts in which they would work at the store, one shift helped in the morning and one shift helped in the afternoon. The brothers of Sigma Nu Delta Chapter were glad that they were granted with the opportunity to help Habitat for Humanity, and a way to give back to the community.
